Burckhardt Compression is developing a new hydrogen compression technology. This is intended to be used in hydrogen filling stations or energy storage systems, for example, and is based on the compressor from a start-up.

According to a press release, Burckhardt Compression from Winterthur has been working on a static hydrogen compressor. In doing so, it wants to enhance a compressor that was developed by GRZ Technologies, a start-up from Western Switzerland, which is already being used in laboratories for small amounts of hydrogen. The compressor works with thermally active metal hydrides rather than moving components, which makes the technology particularly low maintenance.

The press release states that this technology is now to be used in high-pressure solutions at 200, 350 and 700 bar. The compressor is noise and vibration-free and can also be used in sensitive working environments. According to Burckhardt Compression, the compressor is to be used for hydrogen filling stations and hydrogen energy storage systems. It is also suited to hydrogen fuel cells since it is completely free from oil as well.

Marcel Pawlicek, CEO of Burckhardt Compression states: “The increasing demand for gases like hydrogen as a carbon-neutral energy source creates promising market opportunities for Burckhardt Compression. We are therefore monitoring and exploring these developments very closely and initiating research activities in the relevant areas of application at such an early stage.”
