Winterthur/Schaanwald - Designwerk and Kaiser have jointly developed the first fully electric vehicle for sewer cleaning operations. The e-sewer cleaner is set to replace the first diesel vehicles from mid-2023 onwards. In addition to cutting CO2 emissions, the vehicle will also reduce water consumption.

Designwerk, the electromobility company from Winterthur in the canton of Zurich, and Kaiser, the sewer cleaning vehicles specialist from Schaanwald in Liechtenstein, have jointly launched the first fully electric sewer vehicle. Together, the two partners have worked to electrify the AquaStar sewer cleaning vehicle developed by Kaiser, further details of which can be found in a press release. The Designwerk Mid Cab Sewer Cleaner, as the new vehicle is known, features the Aquastar bodywork from Kaiser and is set to replace the first diesel-powered vehicles from the middle of next year.

According to the information in the press release, the e-sewer cleaner is the first all-electric sewer cleaning vehicle capable of fully replacing its diesel counterpart in technical terms, without any restrictions in terms of its operation. With a battery capacity of up to 508 kilowatt hours, the vehicle can be operated for eight hours per day. Thereafter, it can be fully recharged with a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. Two high-performance PTOs are responsible for the stable high pumping power.

Facilitated by a sophisticated water recovery technology, the vehicle cuts water consumption drastically in addition to saving 21,000 liters of diesel per year. “Within ten years, the vehicle consumes between 51 percent and 77 percent less CO2 than a sewer truck with conventional drive, depending on the regional electricity mix”, Designwerk writes in the press release.

After an exclusive cooperation agreement was signed, orders can now be placed for the vehicles. A first pilot series vehicles is expected in the third quarter of 2023.
