The Zurich-based DFINITY Foundation, a major contributor to the Internet Computer blockchain and the associated Chain-key Bitcoin (ckBRC), has agreed a partnership with the city of Lugano. According to a press release issued by DFINITY, this is all part of Lugano’s general blockchain development strategy, which is also centered on the crypto payment app MyLugano, the comprehensive adoption of cryptocurrencies in the local area and ensuring that a wide range of blockchain firms establish a presence in the city.
As part of this newly agreed partnership, the MyLugano app developed by the Zug-based firm NOKU has been given major update, further details of which can be found in the press release. Users of the app now have the opportunity to manage the blockchain infrastructure of Internet Computer and ckBTC directly in the app. The Internet Computer expands the public internet with autonomous, serverless cloud functions, facilitating the construction of practically any system or service on a fully decentralized network by way of canister software, which essentially represents a further development of smart contracts.
Moreover, DFINITY has set up a fund in the amount of 1 million US dollars. This will offer grants to start-ups in Lugano that leverage the unique capabilities of the Internet Computer and “develop open internet services that can serve the global community and in particular integrate ckBTC into their project”.
Here, the aim is to “accelerate the mass adoption of Web3”, as Dominic Williams, Founder and Chief Scientist of the DFINITY Foundation, explains in the press release. He adds: “As one of the world’s fastest growing blockchain hubs, there are many exciting things happening in Lugano and we’re proud to be a part of the innovation of the city”. ce/mm
