Back in the summer of 2020, QS QUacquarelli Symonds, a UK-based provider of analyses for the global higher education sector, ranked the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) in sixth place for its global rankings of the world’s best universities. Now, however, QS has published its rankings of the individual disciplines, according to which ETH Zurich makes the top ten across a total of 15 different academic areas, again taking first place in three fields of geoscience: Earth & Marine Sciences, Geology and Geophysics.

According to a press release issued by ETH Zurich, the QS rankings by discipline not only awarded high marks to ETH Zurich, but also reaffirmed Switzerland’s overall reputation as a leading centre of education. In total, 29 Swiss university programs rank among the top ten in their respective academic fields. These are spread across a total of 12 Swiss universities, with over half attributable to ETH Zurich alone.

This means that 6 percent of all exceptional academic disciplines around the world are based in Switzerland. This level of national density is only exceeded by the USA (47 percent) and the UK (26 percent).

“We are proud that ETH Zurich and Switzerland’s universities consistently rank so highly and in such a wide range of disciplines”, comments Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, in the press release. He adds: “This success is not least owing to the outstanding overall conditions and direct investment made in the areas of research, teaching and knowledge transfer – which Switzerland has been doing for decades”.
