Schlieren/Cambridge - The medtech firm hemotune is initiating a joint feasibility study with the global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. This will focus on exploring applications in connection with hemotune’s innovative blood purification system.

The medtech start-up hemotune, which is based in Schlieren in the canton of Zurich, has announced that is collaborating with AstraZeneca as part of a joint feasibility project. The project is based on the HemoSystem blood purification platform developed by hemotune, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the Swiss company.

This platform aims to combine cutting-edge scientific results from the fields of biomedicine and nanotechnology. In contrast to conventional blood purification systems, the platform is based on nanostructured magnetic beads developed in house. According to the information in the press release, these beads are mixed with the blood where they bind toxins in a targeted manner. Before the purified blood is returned to the patient, the beads and bound toxins are removed via the magnetic filter.

“In the last years we have put a lot of effort in developing our technology consisting of the device, disposable and magnetic beads platform”, comments Lukas Langenegger, co-founder and CEO of hemotune, in the press release. “We are very happy to work with one of the leading global pharma companies to explore applications of the HemoSystem”, he adds.

Founded in 2017 as a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), hemotune is headquartered at the Bio-Technopark Schlieren-Zürich. The medtech firm has won numerous prizes including the Swiss Technology Award 2020, the German Innovation Award 2022 and a Red Dot Design Concept Award 2022, in addition to being named as the No. 1 spin-off to watch by Forbes magazine for 2021. Moreover, the company was a finalist in the Swiss Economic Award 2022 and claimed the Technology Innovation Leadership Award 2022, which is awarded by Frost & Sullivan. mm
