VARO Energy from Cham in the canton of Zug and the Lufthansa Group have agreed to further expanding their long-standing partnership. As both companies have now announced, they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) centered on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). As such, VARO could be in a position to supply the Lufthansa Group with large volumes of SAF at its Munich airport hub, among others, from as early as 2026.
In addition, both companies intend to scale up innovative processes – for example in relation to the production of hydrogen from biogenic raw materials such as sewage sludge – and to classify them as green hydrogen in Germany. This could then be used to make e-SAF.
Lufthansa takes that view that SAF represents a powerful tool in efforts to make aviation more environmentally friendly, as Katja Kleffmann, Head of Fuel Management Supply Lufthansa Group, explains in the press release issued by VARO: “Therefore, we are engaged in the development of SAF markets and making SAF logistically available at airports”.
The MoU is a “a key element of our biofuels strategic growth pillar”, according to Dev Sanyal, CEO of VARO Energy, The energy firm is targeting biofuel production of 260,000 tons per year by 2026, with a long-term aim in excess of 500,000 tons per year, the press release explains. mm
