Zug-based SEBA Bank has been crowned Digital Startup of the Year by U.S. company Aite Group at its 2021 Digital Wealth Management Impact Innovation Awards, as the bank announced in a press release. The global research and advisory firm will be presenting the awards virtually on 17 July. SEBA claims to be “the only global smart bank providing a fully universal suite of regulated banking services in the emerging digital economy”. In 2019, it became the first crypto bank to receive a Swiss banking and securities dealer license.

Aite Group writes that the awards recognize “the industry’s best and brightest” financial services providers. “This year’s Impact Innovation Awards clearly demonstrate that wealth management firms globally have made tremendous progress in all areas of digital client engagement over the last 18 months,” said Aite Group research director Alois Pirker.

Speaking to the online magazine finews.ch on Monday, SEBA’s Chairman of the Board of Directors Päivi Rekonen stated the crypto bank’s clear strategy “to grow beyond Switzerland and serve a global market”. Founded in 2018, the startup completed a financing round worth 20 million Swiss francs at the end of 2020. SEBA now intends to raise further funds for investing in technology and human resources and opening branches in Hong Kong, Singapore and the Middle East.
