VirtaMed simulator being used in Florida

Headquartered in Schlieren in the canton of Zurich, the manufacturer of medical simulators VirtaMed is presenting a new, comprehensive simulation training program for surgical gynecology. According to a press release, the suite, which builds upon VirtaMed’s hysteroscopy training program, will allow gynecologists to practice surgical interventions on a combined mixed reality training platform for hysteroscopies and gynecological laparoscopies. The ability to correctly position the patient, surgeon and assistant for a gynecological procedure in addition to correctly placing the implements required for the procedure are described by the company as being unique to the VirtaMed gynecological laparoscopy simulator. Gynecological trainees are therefore confronted by a set up that mirrors a real-life scenario in the operating theatre rather than dealing with a more conventional practice exercise.

With regard to the simulated surgical techniques, the press release explains that the training program aims to impart key skills required for the identification of ureters, the patency and ligation of the fallopian tubes and the management of ectopic pregnancies. Grasping and cutting tasks in addition to accurate fluid simulation reflect real-life experiences and facilitate the translation of skills from the simulator to operating theatre, the press release explains further.

“We are especially pleased to provide such a comprehensive simulation training program at a time when training opportunities have been limited by COVID-19”, explain CEO Raimundo Sierra, before adding: “VirtaMed’s gynecological simulators have developed so far beyond the initial hysteroscopy simulator that we used to found the company over 14 years ago!”

The headquarters of VirtaMed are located at the IJZ innovation and start-up park, while the company is also a member of the Start Smart Schlieren platform.
