Winterthur - The start-up Scewo from the Greater Zurich Area has developed a wheelchair that can climb stairs. Now it plans to export the wheelchair to Germany and Austria, followed by other countries.

Scewo has presented Scewo Bro, the world’s first electric wheelchair, which self-balances on two wheels and can climb stairs. The wheelchair will be will be available in stores in Switzerland from the end of 2019. The start-up is however already planning its next step. According to a media release, it wants to expand to Germany and Austria in the near future. Initially customers from neighboring countries will only be able to pre-order the wheelchair. The first units are to be delivered in mid-2020.

Bernhard Winter, co-founder and CEO of Scewo: “I am convinced that our innovative device will be well received in neighboring countries”. If the initial expansion step is actually successful, Scewo Bro will also be marketed in other countries.

The start-up Scewo is the brainchild of a group of students from ETH Zurich and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). It is based in Winterthur. The company plans to keep its base there for the time being and intends to develop the wheelchair there based on feedback from customers.
