The city of Zug has issued about 300 electronic IDs to date. Anyone who has such a blockchain-based ID has been able to borrow e-bikes since last November. The city of Zug is working on the Crypto-Bike-Sharing project in collaboration with the Zurich startup AirBie. Those interested in using the bikes must first download an app and connect this with their E-ID. The app then shows users where e-bikes can be found. Via the app, the e-bike in a certain location is unlocked and ready to use.
According to a press release from AirBie, the almost 90 registered users have so far made about 1,500 trips on the eight e-bikes that are currently available. “The area around the train station, the old town, the Bossard Arena and in the north of the city are the hot spots,” explains Christian Raemy, CEO of AirBie. Most trips take less than ten minutes.
The collaborative project between the city of Zug and AirBie will run until the end of summer. What happens then remains to be seen. The aim of the project is above all to gain experience with technology of the blockchain and offer a new service for the E-ID.
