Zurich – SpectroPlast has raised 1.5 million Swiss francs in seed financing. The spin-off of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich will use the new funds to manufacture its customized, 3D-printed silicone products on an industrial scale.

SpectroPlastannounced that it has secured 1.5 million Swiss francs in seed financing from the Munich-based strategic investor AM Ventures (AMV). Founded in 2018 as a spin-off of the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, SpectroPlast manufactures customized silicone products for the healthcare sector.

The investment will allow SpectroPlast to scale up its silicone 3D printing service for products such as patient-specific, customized hearing aids and dental implants, as well as ear protection, orthopedic insoles and ergonomic cushions.

“Silicone 3D printing opens new ways to fabricate soft robotics due to its unlimited geometrical freedom of design and fast iteration cycles,” according to the company’s website. Additive manufacturing with a 3D printer uses laser technology to print any number of complex parts by building them layer by layer from materials that are available as fine powers.

According to Johann Oberhofer, Chief Technology Officer at AMV, “SpectroPlast’s introduction of silicones to the world of additive manufacturing is well-timed with a rapidly growing demand for customized Silicone products observed not only in the healthcare sector but also in many other markets”.

Manuel Schaffner, co-founder and CEO of Spectroplast added: “The traction in the market is shown by our growing customer base. It is our defined mission to become the world’s leading provider of customized silicone products.”
