Schlieren ZH - Fixposition has developed a new sensor allowing robots and drones to navigate even the most challenging environments. The spin-off from ETH Zurich is set to showcase its new development at the Intergeo Digital 2020 trade fair.

Fixposition launches sensor for drones and robots

Fixposition is bringing a new positioning sensor to the market. This is designed to help drones and robots navigate difficult environments. Up to now, these systems have either relied on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) or image recognition algorithms for orientation purposes. However, neither of these two solutions is able to adequately offer precise orientation in particularly challenging environments, Fixposition states in a press release. For example, GNSS solutions are less reliable in remote locations, while image recognition algorithms encounter difficulties in environment where reference points are thin on the ground – for example in cornfields or large meadows.

The new sensor developed by Fixposition now combines the advantages offered by GNSS sensors and image recognition algorithms. It can therefore enable centimeter-accurate positional control for drones and robots even in challenging environments. According to information in the press release, the new solution is also the smallest and most lightweight sensor of its kind ever seen. Thanks to this sensor, drones and robots should now be able to be deployed in new market segments.

Fixposition will showcase its new sensor at the Intergeo Digital 2020 trade in Germany, which will take place between October 13 and 15.

Fixposition is a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and is headquartered in Schlieren in the canton of Zurich.
