In the latest QS World University RankingETH has been placed eighth worldwide. It has therefore been crowned the top university in continental Europe for the 14th consecutive year. However, it has dropped two spots in the ranking year on year. The strong position of ETH is above all down to its international outlook, high number of research citations and good reputation in both the academic world and with employers. Overall, ETH scored 95.4 points out of a possible 100.

Other Swiss universities are also ranked high in the list. As in the previous year, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) came in at number 14.  The University of Zurich ranked at number 70 this year and is therefore down one on last year’s position. The Universities of Geneva (105), Bern (119) and Lausanne (176) also all dropped slightly in the ranking. Conversely, the University of Basel moved up 11 positions and is now at number 138. The Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), which has only made the rankings in the past two years, even improved by 33 positions to number 240 worldwide.

For the tenth time in a row, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA was top of the global rankings. Second was the University of Oxford in the UK. Third place is shared by Stanford University in the USA and the University of Cambridge in the UK.

The QS ranking is based on the results of surveys among scientists and employers regarding the quality of universities. The results also draw on academic journal data, among other statistics.
