Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has turned to a development from the Zurich-based start-up Scandit in an effort to improve its ground handling operations. This solution allows barcodes to be scanned via a cell phone app.
SAS employees are able to use the solution to scan boarding passes, for example, with the result that passengers will no longer have to be moved over to a fixed desk to use a dedicated scanner. In this way, procedures at the gate can be accelerated, as detailed in a press release. In addition, the provision of cell phones is more cost-effective than using dedicated scanners. Another advantage is that the app can be integrated in the Amadeus reservation system, allowing employees to implement seat changes via cell phone as well.
SAS has already tested the solution at airports in Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen, with plans now in place for the airline to deploy the app across all global hubs, including in the USA.
The development from Scandit is not only suitable for use by airlines. It can also be integrated in all manner of devices with camera functionality – including drones. Logistics companies such as FedEx, for example, are using the solution made in Zurich to scan labels and tags.
Scandit was founded in 2009 as a spin off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). Last year, the start-up raised gross proceeds in the amount of 80 million US dollars as part of a financing round.
