Schlieren - Hemotune has been awarded the German Innovation Award 2022 in the category of Medical Technologies. The MedTech start-up based in the Greater Zurich Area has developed a process to purify blood.

Hemotune, a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), has been awarded the German Innovation Award 2022 for its blood purification development. The prize was awarded in the Medical Technologies category, further details of which can be found in a press release.

Hemotune has developed a blood purification platform in the form of its HemoSystem, which functions on the basis of nano-engineered, magnetic sorbent beads. A device similar to a dialysis machine makes it possible to simultaneously remove various disease-related substances directly from the patient’s blood with the highest levels of selectivity and efficiency, according to a description on the German Innovation Award website. The first therapy was designed to treat septic shock.

“Working with doctors and nurses early on helped us to build a user-centric product which is easily implementable to the clinical practice”, comments Lukas Langenegger, CEO and co-founder of hemotune AG, in the press release. He also thanked the Meyer-Hayoz Design Engineering Group, based in Technopark Winterthur, for collaborating on the development and product design, before concluding that this award “encourages us to continue our journey to revolutionize blood purification and intensive care treatment in the future”.

The German Innovation Award honors products and services that distinguish themselves by their user centricity and added value in comparison with earlier solutions. It was established in 1953 by the German Design Council - a body founded by the Bundestag, the German federal parliament.
