Winterthur - Students at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) will be able to take a Bachelor degree in Medical Informatics from the fall of 2023. The course aims to develop highly sought-after specialists for the increasingly data and technology-driven healthcare sector.

The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) will be offering a Bachelor degree in Medical Informatics from the start of the winter semester in 2023. It is intended to produce computer scientists with an in-depth understanding of the processes in hospitals and the healthcare sector. In so doing, the university is reacting to the high demand for specialists at the interface between medicine and IT, further details of which can be found in a press release. At this interface, medical IT specialists are “key players” in the efforts to digitize healthcare systems, explains Barbara Haller, Head of ICT Business Partner Services at the clinical network of Hirslanden Group, in the ZHAW press release.

The course can be completed as a full-time course with a duration of three years or as a part-time course with a minimum duration of four years. Among other things, specialist skills in the areas of computer science, IT management, data management and analysis as well as in medical technology will be taught. There are also plans for students to complete a practical semester as part of the course.

“Anyone who studies Medical Informatics learns to understand and speak the language of both sides, medicine and technology”, comments Thomas Järmann, Head of Teaching at the ZHAW School of Engineering, in the press release. ZHAW offers graduates numerous job opportunities, for example with IT service providers or in the various areas of the healthcare sector.
