Kloten - Were it not for the pandemic, companies at Zurich Airport would have generated annual added value of 7 billion Swiss francs. The opening of the Circle has significantly enhanced the economic importance of Zurich Airport. These are findings from a study by Infras.

Every five years, Flughafen Zürich AG commissions a study of the economic relevance of Zurich Airport. The latest survey was carried out by the independent research and consulting firm Infras, as the airport operator reported in a press release. The results show that companies based at Zurich Airport would have generated 7 billion francs in the reference year 2021.

When compared with the last survey, this equates to an increase of almost 40 percent. Flughafen Zürich AG above all puts this growth down to the opening of the Circle in 2020. In its first full year of operation, the 48 companies based here generated 1.6 billion francs. The airport operator also highlights the significance of air freight for the Swiss economy. It accounts for around 40 percent of exports from Switzerland on average. Zurich Airport handles freight averaging 1,076 tons each day, including transit transport.

The Zurich Chamber of Commerce (ZHK) also emphasizes the relevance of Zurich Airport in its own commentary. According to the ZHK, the survey results “clearly showed that Zurich Airport not only effectively connects us with the world but is also of great economic importance”.
