Steiner AG Celebrates 100 Years

When Carl Steiner founded his one-man carpentry shop in Zurich in 1915, he placed the cornerstone for our 100-year success story. Today, Steiner AG is one of the leading general contractors in Switzerland.

The founder of the company, Carl Steiner, began with a small carpentry shop in Oerlikon in 1915 and expanded his business over the years to become one of the leading real estate developers, full-service and general contracting firms in Switzerland. Steiner took over the number one spot in the building sector in the 1960s with the construction of the ultra-modern Swissair headquarters. The completion of the Hotel Intercontinental in 1972, which was the highest building in Zurich at the time and is known today as Swissôtel, also enhanced Steiner’s reputation in the Region.

We celebrated our 100th company anniversary on November 3, 2015, in Sihlcity with 120 guests in attendance. The shopping and entertainment center is one of the many successful projects completed by Steiner AG and was thus the ideal setting for the festivities. The construction of this 119,599-yd²urban neighborhood center earned us two awards from the International Council of Shopping Centers Inc. (ICSC) in 2008, along with the “Distinction of Excellent Construction” from the canton of Zurich in 2013.

To date we have built over 1200 residential complexes, 540 commercial premises, 45 hotels and 150 facilities such as universities, schools, hospitals, prisons and nursing homes. Steiner AG is based in Zurich and has branches in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Tolochenaz, Lucerne and St. Gallen. Since May 2010, the Steiner Group has been part of the Indian Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. (HCC) and is represented on the Indian market by its sister company Steiner India Ltd.

In addition to Sihlcity, Steiner AG has enriched the Greater Zurich Area with other distinguished projects: the Prime Tower, the Sky Key, the Löwenbräu, the Lindbergh-Allee and the pioneering cooperative housing development “mehr als wohnen” in Zurich, as well as the Urbahn (Bleiche) building complex in Schaffhausen. Further projects have been executed by Steiner AG in the meantime: the Adlergarten nursing home and the Wintower office building in Winterthur, the Hotel ibis Messe Airportin Zurich and the Greenhouse shopping mall in Dietlikon.

Daniel Ducrey was appointed CEO of Steiner Group in April 2015. He joined the Steiner Group in August 2009 as Head of TC/GC Region Centre-West and as Member of the Group Executive Board. Since October 2012 he held the position as CEO of Steiner India based in Mumbai.

Daniel Ducrey has been active in the field of construction and real estate in Switzerland since 1992. From 1999 to 2009 he held various operational and managerial positions at Losinger Construction AG, a subsidiary of Bouygues Group, in particular as Head of the Renovation and Conversion unit in Switzerland. In this capacity he was also a member of the Executive Board. Daniel Ducrey graduated from the Biel University of Applied Sciences with a degree in architecture and subsequently earned a degree in business administration from the Bern University of Applied Sciences.
