Winterthur Gas & Diesel

Winterthur Gas & Diesel AG (WinGD) is a leading developer of low-speed two-stroke gas and diesel engines that are used in marine propulsion systems in the merchant shipping industry.

With its innovative solutions, the company strives to set new standards of reliability, effectiveness and environmental sustainability. WinGD offers construction and design services, licenses and technical support for manufacturers, shipyards and ship operators around the world. The company's engines are sold under the Wärtsilä brand name and manufactured under license in four countries. The head office of WinGD is located in Winterthur, where the company started developing large diesel engines under the Sulzer name in 1898.

Far from the high seas, the most powerful ship engines in the world have been developed in Winterthur for more than 100 years. Oceangoing freighters such as tankers, bulk carriers and container ships employ these low-speed two-stroke engines for their propulsion.

Although Winterthur only has narrow rivers, the city's connection to the shipbuilding industry is far greater than Zurich's, for example. This is due in large part to the presence of one of the world's largest suppliers of marine propulsion systems – Winterthur Gas & Diesel. The company mainly employs engineers and highly trained specialists. Martin Wernli, CEO of Winterthur Gas & Diesel AG: «Winterthur's central location and proximity to top-caliber schools and companies with impeccable reputations offer us a wealth of business location advantages.»
