Tunnels are critical components of transport infrastructure, which is why they must be inspected on a regular basis. However, these processes are tedious and can cost up to several thousand euros per square metre of tunnel wall, according to Amberg Technologies AG, which is headquartered in Regensdorf in the canton of Zurich. In addition, the resultant data come in several different formats with little digitalization.
Amberg Technologies is now teaming up with Elaborarium SL from Spain, the German AKG company group and the Frauenhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques (IPM) to simplify the inspection of tunnel constructions. In a joint project, the partners are developing a novel multi-sensor system that will collect data on geometry, surface structure and water inlet in tunnels in a single measuring procedure.
The new system features a high-speed scanner that records the entire tunnel wall using several lasers with different wavelengths to provide photorealistic 2D images that can display cracks of less than one millimetre. “A completely new deflection unit will be developed to ensure efficient and comprehensive detection,” explains Amberg Technologies, while an “additional multispectral measuring unit will detect water inlets”.
All measurement data will be made available in digital form and can be used for Building Information Modeling (BIM) purposes.
