AMZ cleans up at the Formula Student Germany

For the first time in the history of the largest engineering competition, the racing team from the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich clinched two overall victories. The AMZ’s two electric racing cars came out on top of the international competition of some 3,700 students in Hockenheim, Germany.

The AMZ, which consists of 65 students from ETH Zurich and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, has been participating in the Formula Student, which was launched in 1972, for the past 12 years with its own designs. And it has been involved from the very start in the category for electric cars, which was created in 2010.

According to AMZ, its eiger electric racing car “struggled with several difficulties” this season, and two of its rear engines even failed in the endurance race. Nevertheless, the eiger won by a narrow margin against its competitors.

In contrast, its autonomous racing car, the gotthard driverless, left the competitors in its category in the dust. Two young engineers from the AMZ were also named as the best in their category in engineering design by experts from the automotive industry at the Formula Student Germany.

For the AMZ team behind the gotthard driverless, the season has ended on a high note with the victory in Hockenheim. The eiger has the opportunity to score another victory next week at a race in Barcelona.
