According to a statement, the partnership will focus on polymer actuators, sensors and generators that enhance the product performance of various applications such as pumps, valves, medical dosing systems or vehicle locking systems.
The technology is based on large numbers of stacked thin layers of elastomers that are coated with compliant electrodes. This configuration allows the polymer actuator to turn electric energy directly into mechanical work.
The new technology boasts several advantages including low energy consumption, no complex mechanical partners, and “noise-free operation with sensoring”. The partners plan to provide the transducers to a wide variety of industries.
CT Systems, a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), will act as the broker of polymer transducers integration technology. Datwyler, a specialist in sealing solutions from Altdorf in the canton of Uri, will set be responsible for the industrial scale process.
The new partnership also marks the beginning of an industrial consortium as CTsystems “fosters strong alliances with academia and industry partners”.
