Zurich - The engineering and consulting company Helbling has developed a mobile concept robot. This demonstrates how autonomous navigation can be achieved with little effort using commercially available components and software solutions.

Experts from the engineering and consulting firm Helbling have developed a mobile robot by the name of HelMoRo (Helbling Mobile Robot). According to a specialist article published on the company website, this development represents a showcase. HelMoRo is designed to demonstrate how autonomously navigating robots can be realized with commercially available components and software modules – a process which requires only “relatively little effort” to boot. The author of the specialist article, Beat Zumbühl, outlines the current relevance of mobile robotics solutions. The head of robotics development at Helbling Technik AG has identified an increasing number of applications in this area. He cites logistics as an example, which is growing in importance as a result of the flourishing online trade.

The Helbling development can autonomously find and manipulate objects. To do this, the robot is able to capture its surroundings and create a digital map for itself. Thanks to an optical camera, HelMoRo can also differentiate and categorize objects. The external design of the robot was created using a 3D printer.

According to the specialist article, the HelMoRo platform reflects Helbling’s entire range of expertise – from system architecture to sensor technology and algorithms, all the way through to mechatronics and industrial design. During the development process, agile methods were applied. In the author’s view, the key to success was precise knowledge of the requirements of the target application. Right from the very beginning, the system architecture and system components must be aligned and assessed with these requirements. For implementation, it is important that technology and process risks are quickly detected and eliminated.

Helbling forms expert teams for the development of sophisticated robotic systems for customers from a wide variety of industries. With HelMoRo, the company primarily intends to demonstrate which robotics solutions are possible for complex contexts “with justifiable effort and risk”.
