Laax GR – Telecommunications provider Sunrise has launched a 5G network at the Laax ski resort in the Greater Zurich Area, making it the world’s first standardized 5G network at a ski resort.

Sunrise has gone live with the world’s first standardized 5G network at a ski resort. Located on the Crap Sogn Gion mountain above Laax at 2,252 metres above sea level, the ski resort is now “well equipped for the future” when “the first tourists start hitting the slopes with their 5G-compatible smartphones sometime around 2020”, Reto Gurtner, chairman of the board of directors and CEO of the Weisse Arena Group, said in a press release.

The Laax ski region is already a trend-setter in digitalization. The first mountain internet café at the valley station of the Laax ski resort opened its doors a little less than four years after the World Wide Web was born, and the entire skiing area has been offering seamless Wi-Fi network coverage since 2013. The ski resort has also won several awards with its interactive app INSIDE LAAX.

A 5G network opens up further opportunities to promote digitalization in ski regions. For instance, holograms of famous sports professionals could teach their best tricks to skiers, while humanoid robots could serve guests relaxing on a sunny terrace restaurant. In addition, the Internet of Things will make it possible for skiers to use their smartphone to find lost items such as goggles or caps.
