Wädenswil/Singapore - Mirai Foods has entered into a strategic partnership with the Singapore-based Shiok Meats. The partners are set to develop the production of in vitro beef in Singapore, while also seeking to accelerate the regulatory approval process.

Mirai Foods, the specialist in the area of cultivated meat production from Wädenswil in the canton of Zurich, is to supply the Singapore-based Shiok Meats subsidiary Gaia Foods with bovine muscle and fat stem cells. These represent the essential raw material for the production of cultivated - i.e. developed in a laboratory setting - beef on the basis of natural, highly pure, non-genetically modified cells collected from premium cattle breeds that are not commonly available in Singapore, further details of which can be found in a press release.

In return, Mirai Foods will be supported in its efforts to accelerate entry into the Singapore market, according to Sandhya Sriram, Group CEO at Shiok Meats and Gaia Foods. Shiok Meats has a special regulatory status because Singapore was the first country in the world to authorize the sale of in vitro meat. The East Asian country is also home to the world’s largest production facility for cultured meat. Sriram additionally explains that her company is also eyeing up opportunities for the potential production and distribution of its seafood products in Switzerland, which she describes in the press release as “a high purchasing power market with a strong first adoption mindset”.

Christoph Mayr, CEO of Mirai Foods, assesses the partnership with a Singaporean company as being “particularly interesting for us given the country’s strong distribution and partnership network across the Asia Pacific region, which has been showing a growing appetite for safe, high-quality beef”.
