Zurich – The Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway is set to become the new space station. RUAG Space, a company from the Greater Zurich Area, is participating in the development of the structure and thermal subsystems for the station’s European module.

The International Space Station (ISS) is already halfway through its forecasted lifespan. It is set to be followed by the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway, which will too comprise several modules.

Europe is contributing a multi-purpose module known as ESPRIT, explained RUAG Space in a statement. Its name stands for European System Providing Refuelling, Infrastructure and Telecommunications, which denotes the module’s functions.

For the ESPRIT module, RUAG Space is developing structures and thermal subsystems, according to the statement. The company in Zurich-Seebach was chosen by Airbus Defence and Space, itself contracted by the European Space Agency ESA.

“We are very proud to be involved in such an early phase of development,” commented Peter Guggenbach, CEO RUAG Space.

The launch of the ESPRIT module is planned for the end of 2023.
