Wädenswil ZH – C-CIT Sensors AG from the Greater Zurich Area has developed a sensor for the continuous measurement of glucose and lactate in cell cultures. This sensor will help biotech and pharma as well as cell bio research at universities.

According to a press release from C-CIT Sensors, the new sensor facilitates the continuous measurement of parameters such as glucose and lactate in cell cultures. This takes place in-situ and in real time. The data being generated at a 20 second frequency is continuously sent to a database via wireless communication. It can then be accessed on a smartphone, for example. Until now, the company reports that glucose and lactate measurement relied on frequent sampling and off-line analytics, which results in error-prone and risky data acquisition and processing. This new sensor presents a solution to that problem.

The measurement of parameters such as glucose and lactate is key to understanding different kinds of bioprocesses. These support the development and production of new drugs and cell-based treatments. C-CIT Sensors is therefore above all aiming its products at the biotech and pharma industries as well as universities engaged in cell bio research. The company intends to demonstrate its new sensor at the BioProcess International Conference & Exhibition in the USA at the start of September.

C-CIT Sensors AG has its headquarters in Wädenswil and was established in 2002, headed by Ursula Spichiger-Keller, a Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) at the time whose research lies at its core. C-CIT Sensors AG now also works in close collaboration with other research organisations. The company’s partners include the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), the University of Bern and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
