Bonn – Switzerland ranks third in the latest Global Connectedness Index from DHL. Together with the Netherlands and Singapore, it is one of the top three most globally connected countries in the world.

In its Global Connectedness Index (GCI), the logistics specialist DHL investigates the current state of globalization, measured by international flows of trade, capital, information and people. The latest edition of the Index provides a comprehensive assessment of developments in globalization across 169 countries worldwide. Switzerland has been ranked at number three and has therefore climbed one spot since the last edition. Only the Netherlands and Singapore are placed higher. It is followed by Belgium and the United Arab Emirates.

When it comes to international flows of products and services (trade), capital, information and people, Germany is the most significant partner for Switzerland, followed by the USA, Luxembourg and France. China ranks ninth for share of Switzerland’s international flows. The Index also measures the current state of globalization, categorizing the countries based on the intensity of international flows (depth) and geographical distribution of flows (breadth). Switzerland is placed at number 12 for depth and six for breadth. In the area of depth, it scores particularly well for information flows, while capital flows are rated highly under breadth.

Although the world is globalizing, John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, commented in a DHL press release that “there is still tremendous untapped potential around the world.” He regards globalization as “a decisive factor in growth and prosperity”, adding that “increasing international cooperation continues to contribute to stability, so companies and countries that embrace globalization benefit tremendously”.
