Zurich/Chengdu - SynSense is integrating its innovative sensors in smart vehicle cockpits for the first time. The neuromorphic chip provider has entered into a partnership with BMW. Together, the two companies intend to explore event-based vision in the area of neuromorphic technology.

SynSense is entering the world of smart vehicle cockpits. To this end, the neuromorphic intelligence and solutions provider has partnered with BMW. The spin-off from the Institute of Neuroinformatics at the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich announced in a press release that it will advance the integration of neuromorphic chips and smart cockpits and explore related fields with the German car manufacturer.

This exploration will focus on SynSense’s dynamic visual intelligence sensor (Speck). It combines in one single chip SynSense’s low-power SNN vision processor with an event-based sensor, so it can both “see” and perform computing. Dynamic visual technology does not record an entire scene, but instead captures changes in a scene. The image obtained contains only operationally relevant data, protecting privacy. The visual processing only consumes power while the event triggers computing, thus reducing data redundancy and latency.

“Speck doesn’t need caches or additional cameras. It can capture visual event information, process real-time information computing, and conduct smart scene analysis with less than 1 milliwatt of power consumption and with 5-10 millisecond end-to-end latency,” said Ning Qiao, founder and CEO of SynSense. This patented technology enables solutions for a variety of artificial intelligence edge computing applications, including autonomous robots, always-on co-processors for mobile and embedded devices, wearable healthcare systems, security, IoT applications, and computing at the network edge.

SynSense was founded in Zurich in 2017 In 2020, the company moved its headquarters to China, but still has offices in Zurich.
