BMW supports innovative startups with significant potential through its BMW Startup Garage program. The automotive manufacturer specifically focuses on startups that can deliver clear benefit for its products, systems and processes. In the context of the program, BMW will now be joining forces with Zurich startup embotech and Seoul Robotics from South Korea, as was reported in a press release on LinkedIn. The aim of the cooperation is to jointly develop cutting-edge technology for production and to work on automated functions for internal logistics and assembly processes.
In 2013, embotech was founded as a spin-off of the Automatic Control Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). The company develops software for motion planning which can perform the steering, braking, acceleration and parking for driverless vehicles. These solutions are not based on machine learning systems, with embotech instead adopting a deterministic mathematical approach that is based on the physical specifications of the car, allowing for on-board real-time trajectory generation. As this does not require situational pre-programming or vehicle training, the car can respond to its surroundings completely autonomously.
Founded in 2017, Seoul Robotics develops perception software for distance and speed measurement powered by deep learning.
