Zurich/St.Gallen - Google has honoured three Swiss researchers with its Google Research Awards 2022. They work at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and the University of St.Gallen. Their areas of focus include artificial intelligence, quantum computing and natural language processing.

As part of its Faculty Award Program, each year Google recognizes the achievements of elite academic research across 16 research areas around the world. In Switzerland, two Google Research Awards went to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH). Professor Ryan Cotterell was awarded in the research area of “Natural Language Processing” and Professor Marina Krstic Marinkovic for “Quantum Computing”.

Furthermore, Professor Damian Borth from the University of St.Gallen (HSG) has been awarded for his research in the area of “Machine Learning and Data Mining” in connection with trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), further details of which can be found in a press release issued by HSG. Professor Borth will use the award to train what are known as hyper-representations from large populations of pre-trained neural networks. According to the HSG press release, these can help to make the next generation of AI both safer and more robust.

The Google Research Scholar Award 2022 was awarded to a total of 94 researchers around the world, of which 14 are based in Europe.
