Zurich/Hamburg - Nexxiot is to equip the Hapag-Lloyd container fleet with modern IoT technology. Global monitoring is expected to be rolled out for a significant share of the approximately 3 million Hapag-Lloyd standard containers by the end of 2022.

According to a press release, Nexxiot, the Zurich-based start-up specializing in the digitization of freight transport, has been chosen as the official supplier for the digitization of the Hapag-Lloyd container fleet. Nexxiot is to equip a significant share of the approximately 3 million Hapag-Lloyd standard containers with modern IoT (Internet of Things) technology from the end of this year. This will facilitate worldwide monitoring of the containers used in global trade. As such, Hapag-Lloyd is set to become the first carrier in the world with the ability to trace and analyze the location and status of its containers in real time, the press release states.

“This allows us to detect delays earlier, automatically inform the affected customers and initiate countermeasures quickly”, explains Olaf Habert, Director Container Applications at Hapag-Lloyd, in the press release.

The Globehopper Edge IoT devices supplied by Nexxiot have the capacity to transmit real-time location and temperature data in addition to monitoring sudden container impacts. There is also the possibility to connect other sensors via Bluetooth.

According to Stefan Kalmund, CEO of Nexxiot AG, which was founded in 2015, it is often not possible to trace the location and status of containers on the high seas. However, owing to the collaboration between Hapag-Lloyd and Nexxiot as a system partner, “Hapag-Lloyd is setting new standards and positioning itself as a pioneer for the global digital transformation of logistics”, Kalmund concludes in the press release.
