Securecell is developing a membrane that could revolutionize the treatment of diabetes patients.

Devices currently available on the market cannot measure the blood sugar levels of diabetes patients directly in the blood. Meanwhile, insulin injections do not induce an immediate effect. As a result, the blood sugar levels of diabetes patients are only in the target range for around half of each day, according to Carlo Andretta, CEO of Securecell, in an article in “Finanz und Wirtschaft”. There can be long-term consequences.

Securecell is developing a new treatment for measuring blood sugar and administering insulin promptly. The method is based on a silicon membrane that measures values in the blood. Known as Seraccess technology, it has already proved successful in its core functions in the lab, said Andretta. “It largely eliminates fundamental development risks,” he added.

The company, which is headquartered in Urdorf, is now planning to go public on the Euronext exchange. Andretta revealed that the move could take place as early as 2021, raising 40 to 50 million Swiss francs. These funds would finance further development, with the Seraccess technology currently in the preclinical phase. In-human trials are planned for 2022 and Andretta is hoping for a swift market approval from the American health association FDA.

Around 300 private investors to date have secured Seraccess’s financing. Core shareholders hold around 56 per cent of the capital. Among them are them are the four founders, who together hold 43 per cent. Andretta owns 25 per cent.
