The University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) have established the Wyss Zurich Foundation. The joint foundation will decide which projects from the Wyss Zurich Translational Center, established in 2015, will receive funding in future. The research center focuses on the specialisms of regenerative medicine and robotics. Michael Schaepman, president of UZH and the foundation board, comments in a press release by UZH: “ This step draws a clear line between the foundation, which decides on donations, and the center, which receives the funds.”
The Wyss Zurich Translational Center dates back to a donation of 120 million US dollars from the former CEO of the orthopedics company Synthes, multibillionaire Hansjörg Wyss. Based on the expertise and infrastructure of both universities, the center applies scientific ideas. The new foundation board includes two representatives each from UZH, ETH, and the Wyss Foundation USA.
In its press release, UZH mentions the Liver4Life project as an example of the success of the Wyss Zurich Translational Center. An interdisciplinary team from the two universities developed a perfusion machine that could keep liver to be transplanted alive not just for hours but for a week. Another example is Wingtra, which produces professional drones that launch and land vertically and are currently sold on five continents.
Vanessa Wood, Vice President for Knowledge Transfer and Corporate Relations at ETH Zurich, states: “Both of these projects exemplify how successfully Wyss Zurich Translational Center helps UZH and ETH accelerate translational research and bridge the gap between basic research and application.”
