The University of Zurich (UZH) generated a Gross Value Added (GVA) of 6.4 billion Swiss francs in 2016. This means that UZH generated almost 5 francs for every 1 franc it received, according to a statement from the university.
For its study, the League of European Research Universities (LERU) calculated the value added of several factors: the core contribution (such as generating income or spending on goods, services and capital projects); the student contribution (including student spending, employment and placements); the contribution of knowledge transfer, enterprise and innovation; the tourism contribution; and the graduate premium or overall contribution of teaching and learning.
The GVA of all 23 LERU universities in 2016 was close to 100 billion euros. The study found that UZH supports 48,000 jobs in total.
According to the UZH, the data provides “a snapshot of the contribution that universities make to the economy”. At the same time, the report does not capture the most important tasks of universities: educating the next generation of graduates and professionals, and increasing knowledge for the benefit of society.
“Economic figures alone do not paint the full picture,” argues UZH.
