Zurich - The ETH spin-off AFC focuses on air hygiene and the dispersion of particles and harmful substances in the air. Amid the coronavirus crisis, the company is creating individual ventilation strategies for companies based on simulations. These aim to minimize the risk of infection.

AFC Air Flow Consulting AG was created as a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) over twenty years ago. It specializes in air hygiene, focusing on the dispersion of particles and harmful substances in the air of buildings. AFC’s core competency is a computer simulation that can be used to visualize air flows. This enables the efficacy of various measures regarding air flow and the dispersion of harmful substances to be assessed.

Due to the unusual situation with regard to the coronavirus crisis, the company is now working on a new protection concept for companies. For this, the infrastructure, room occupancy, and ventilation situation are first analyzed. A ventilation strategy is then developed based on simulations and mathematical verifications. This strategy aims to help decrease the infection risk.

AFC’s protection concept should help companies to be reopened more quickly according to Stefan Kühn from International Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Systems (INCS Ltd), which advised the company on the new development. Higher capacity is also said to be possible without increasing the risk of infection.
