Schlieren - VirtaMed from the Greater Zurich Area has agreed a partnership with Memic, a medtech firm that specializes in surgery robots. Hominis Surgical System is the first surgical robot with humanoid-shaped arms.

VirtaMed, the medical simulator specialist based in Schlieren, is now collaborating with the Israeli firm Memic Innovative Surgery, further details of which can be found in a press release. The medtech firm headquartered in Tel Aviv and Fort Lauderdale in the US State of Florida has developed the first surgical robot with humanoid-shaped arms. The Hominis Surgical System is a surgical robot with miniature arms in addition to shoulder, elbow and wrist joints that, according to the press release, provide human-level dexterity.

VirtaMed and Memic are developing a virtual reality simulator program to support surgeon training in connection with the Hominis Surgical System. Memic assumes that the simulator program will be ready for use in real-world settings by the end of 2022. The new simulation program will become part of the Memic Skills Development Pathway, which provides surgeons with customized and comprehensive training and education.

“The comprehensive Skills Development Pathway for Hominis is impressive and shows Memic’s significant commitment to professional education and represents our shared vision of offering off-site training and education for surgeons, in addition to real-world experience in the operating room, to improve surgical technique and patient outcomes”, comments Stefan Tuchschmid, co-CEO and founder of VirtaMed, in the press release.

The Hominis system has been designed to replicate the motions and capabilities of a surgeon’s arms. Multiple instruments can be introduced to the body through a single portal, while the 360-degree joint facilitates optimal access points and working angles. Hominis was granted de novo marketing authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2021. The de novo process is used for innovative medical products for which there are no comparable products.

VirtaMed is headquartered at the IJZ, an innovation and start-up park located in Schlieren. The company is also a member of Start Smart Schlieren.
