Winterthur – The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) has put two online courses on the edX online learning platform. It is therefore the first university of applied sciences worldwide to offer this digital campus.

ZHAW offers online courses worldwide

The online learning platform edX was founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). On the platform, universities and companies can offer free online courses and programs. The edX platform is home to more than 35 million learners.

The ZHAW has now become the first university of applied sciences worldwide to offer two online courses on the learning platform, as was reported in a press release. One course is in biology and life sciences. It focuses on aquaponics, a technology that combines aquaculture and soil-independent food production in a circulatory system. The nutrients contained in fish food and fish excrement are used as fertilizer for plants. Once the plants have absorbed the nutrients, the purified water is returned to the fish tanks.

The second ZHAW online course is devoted to ethical and legal questions of globalization and human rights. Participants learn how companies can ensure the safety and health of their employees.

Both ZHAW online courses are in English and therefore suitable for international audiences. Further online courses in German and English are already in planning.
