The city of Zug introduced a blockchain-based digital ID in autumn 2017. Although it is currently still in a pilot phase, the city plans to use the digital ID for various applications in the future, including e-voting.
On June 25, the city of Zug will hold a test vote with the new technology to look into issues relating to security. It is also part of a “complex research project” between the city of Zug and the research group of Alexander Denzler, a lecturer for Blockchain Technology and Big Data at the School of Information Technology at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
For the test vote, Zug residents with a digital ID will answer two yes-no questions and one question with several possible answers. The survey will provide the city council with information from the population, but in contrast to a regular referendum, the responses will not be legally binding. The questions concern fireworks at the Zug Lake Festival and residents’ attitudes towards the digital identity.
More than 200 Zug residents now have an electronic identity card and there is still time to register for one before the vote, according to a statement from the city of Zug. The survey will run until July 1.
