German car manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) has ordered 800 industrial robots from technology company ABB in the Greater Zurich Area. These will support production of the new all-electric ID. Buzz van in Hanover.

Volkswagen is increasingly automating its production. As part of this process, the automaker has now ordered 800 industrial robots from ABB, as was revealed in an ABB press release. These will go into operation at the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle plant in Hanover, where they will support production of the new all-electric ID. Buzz van. The robots will be installed in the body shop to undertake a range of body construction tasks.

The Hanover factory is currently being modernized and will begin production in 2022. “With the launch of the ID. BUZZ, we will complete the modernization of our Hanover plant currently in progress, which will also benefit all the other models produced at this location,” said Josef Baumert, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles responsible for Production and Logistics, in a different press release from Volkswagen.

Volkswagen has also ordered more than 1,400 robots from Japanese manufacturer Fanuc for its production facilities in Germany and the USA. In total, the Group plans to invest €33 billion by 2024 with a view to “becoming the world market leader in e-mobility”. These three plants are to benefit from investment of “several billion euros”.
