Zurich - The start-up Nemosia has received funding in the amount of 150,000 Swiss francs from Venture Kick for the development of an NMDA tracer. This would make it possible to detect at an early stage the onset of neurological degenerations including Alzheimer’s or multiple sclerosis before a person even displays symptoms.

Nemosia seeking to detect neurological degenerations at an early stage

Nemosia is in the process of developing the first successful NMDA (N-Methyl-D-aspartate) tracer for the early-stage detection of neurological degenerations. According to a press release, this makes it possible, together with the positron emission tomography (PET) tracer from the Zurich-based start-up, to detect the onset of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis (MS) before a person even displays symptoms. This development is being supported by Venture Kick to the tune of 150,000 Swiss francs. Nemosia, a spin-off from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), will use this grant to drive forward commercialization activities for its innovative solution.

According to the press release, Nemosia expects brain scans to become part of general health check-ups, even where there are no visible symptoms of neurological disorder, over the next decade. The target indications for the first NMDA tracer developed by the start-up include MS in addition to Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Awa Diagne, co-founder and CEO of Nemosia, regards the collaboration with Venture Kick as an “amazing experience”. The funding has not only facilitated the procurement of materials for the proof of concept, but Venture Kick also “supported us with expert coaching to strengthen our business strategy”, she explains in the press release.

Over the next few months, Nemosia is planning to raise a total of 3 million Swiss francs as part of a seed financing round, the press release explains. Moreover, clinical development in conjunction with the Harvard Medical School is also to get underway.

The Venture Kick funding initiative supports start-ups throughout their journey, from the initial idea right up to the founding of a company. The Venture Kick Foundation has mandated the Institute for Young Enterprises (IFJ) with the implementation of the initiative.
