Bellinzona – Tourism organization Ticino Turismo is building up a new platform in collaboration with neighboring regions in Italy and local research institutes. This will collect data and enable analyses that can be used to develop new services for tourists.

The tourism sector can greatly benefit from digitalization. Ticino Turismo now plans to exploit these opportunities together with neighboring regions in Italy. In the context of the project DESy (short for Digital Destination Evolution System), a platform will be developed which will collect and analyze data. The evaluated data will help improve communication with visitors and launch new services.

“In future, we can interact with visitors in real time and present a side to Ticino that has been specifically conceived for each respective tourist,” explained Kaspar Weber, Interim Director of Ticino Turismo. “One possible scenario might be the customization of the website or newsletter as well as the development of innovative apps to offer content tailored to the individual.”

Alongside Ticino Turismo, the Italian organizations Distretto Turistico dei Laghi and ATL Novara plus the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola are involved in the project, which will be realized over the next few years. Development is also being supported by the research laboratory of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the USI Università della Svizzera italiana and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) with the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research (IDSIA). The IDSIA will evaluate the collected data in anonymized form using artificial intelligence. The USI is tasked with analyzing the technical aspects of the platform.
