Swiss hospitals have for the first time processed orders for medical products via a blockchain. The infrastructure was provided by the startup Xatena.

 

The Kantonsspital Winterthur, the Kantonsspital Baden, the University Children’s Hsopital Zurich and the Spitalregion Fürstenland Toggenburg are testing a blockchain infrastructure developed by the Zurich startup company Xatena for ordering medical products. The first orders for the hospitals have now been successfully processed, announced a statement. The suppliers for the transaction were Anandic Medical Systems AG from Feuerthalen in the canton of Zurich and ITRIS Medical AG from Spreitenbach in the canton of Zurich.

Blockchain infrastructure can make the transport of a medical product traceable, helping rule out counterfeit scandals. With the new Medical Devices Regulation (MDR), all medical products require an identification number (Unique Device Identification, UDI) so they can be clearly identified in the supply chain. Blockchain also makes it possible to track the different transaction steps. Everyone involved in the supply chain – from manufacturers to smart logistics and patient dossiers – can be connected.   

Xatena’s blockchain is a so-called Permissioned Blockchain based on Hyperledger technology. The Zurich startup developed the technology in partnership with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland
