Swiss and SBB extend Air Rail route to Munich

Swiss is intensifying its collaboration with SBB to expand its intermodal rail/air travel product, announced a statement. In partnership with SBB, the international airline is adding a train route to its services under the new name Swiss Air Rail. From July, the first Swiss Air Rail service will run six times a day in each direction between Zurich Airportand Munich central station. Passengers may also board or alight in Bregenz. The rail ticket is included in the Swiss air fare.  

There are already Air Rail connections between Zurich Airport and the train stations Basel SBB, Lugano and Geneva, but the expansion of the network provides “smarter combinations of rail and air transport”, according to Swiss CCO Tamur Goudarzi Pour. Thanks to continual expansion of the intermodular Swiss Air Rail service, it is easier for passengers to connect to the Zurich Airport hub by train, making the joint service more attractive for travellers. 

According to Véronique Stephan, SBB’s Head of Passenger Services Markets, Swiss passengers can now make greater use of rail connections to and from the airport for both short and long journeys. “With these quick and direct new rail services, they’ll enjoy the best possible connections with their Swiss flights,” she says in the statement. 

The partners also plan to expand the range of Air Rail services in Switzerland, as well as to allow for stops in Bern, Fribourg, Lausanne and Bellinzona.
