According to the INSEAD Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2019 and the IMD World Talent Ranking 2018, Switzerland and in particular the Greater Zurich Area are the world's most attractive locations for attracting, retaining and developing talent. The key factors here include the excellent Swiss education system, the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the European Union, the cosmopolitan attitude, the attractive conditions for employees and employers, social mobility and the high quality of life.
Why does Zurich attract so many talents and specialists?
Within Switzerland, the Greater Zurich Area attracts highly qualified talents. In the city ranking of the Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2019, Zurich makes it into the top ten once again and ranks fifth.
Greater Zurich already scored high in the previous years thanks to excellent career opportunities for talents, the infrastructure as well as the high quality of life. In addition, the wage level for highly qualified talents is at a uniform level throughout Europe. Considering the low individual taxation, Switzerland is particularly attractive for top-earning specialists. From an employer's point of view, Greater Zurich also offers ideal conditions for recruiting the best talents. At first glance, employment costs in Switzerland appear to be very high, but when viewed in relation to the low tax burden and social security contributions, they are lower than in large cities such as Hong Kong, Berlin or Amsterdam.
Innovative, global companies such as Google, Microsoft or IBM as well as a growing start-up community help Greater Zurich to thrive as a business location. E.g. the city of Zurich has now become Google's largest and most important location for development outside the USA. More than 2,500 employees from 75 nations work for Google in Zurich. The proximity to the ETH and other universities in the Greater Zurich Area plays a central role for companies such as Google, Roche, Novartis, Disney Research, ABB and Microsoft.
Outstanding education system
Switzerland has a very successful and well-established dual education system. School graduates have the opportunity to complete a three- to a four-year apprenticeship in a company. Two-thirds of young people choose this career path. Apprentices acquire practical professional skills and take active part in the company’s processes. At the same time, they attend a vocational school. It conveys theoretical knowledge related to the profession as well as a broad general education. At the university level, every year, around 14,500 Bachelor's degrees, 14,000 Master's degrees and 4,000 doctorates are awarded. Additionally, there are around 16,000 bachelor's and master's graduates from universities of applied sciences. With the ETH, one of the world's leading technical universities, the University of Zurich and various universities of applied sciences, the Greater Zurich Area has a particularly high percentage of tertiary educational institutions and graduates.
Linguistic and cultural diversity
In addition to the dual education system, linguistic and cultural diversity is a special feature of Switzerland. The official languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian and Romansh. The local employees are therefore known for their multilingualism, intercultural competence and adaptability. English as a lingua franca is very common in Switzerland and the second most spoken language in Zurich.
