In 2021, around 50,900 new companies were entered into the commercial register of Switzerland, as revealed in a report published by the St.Gallen-based association of creditors Creditreform. In comparison with the previous year, this equates to an increase of 8.6 percent, according to the information presented in the report.
The number of companies that ceased trading has meanwhile fallen slightly below the previous year’s level. Net growth across the 12-month period has risen to over 20,000 companies for the first time – in fact, at +22,500, the growth here is significantly in excess of this benchmark.
At 25.9 percent, the highest growth rate in start-ups was reported by the canton of Schaffhausen. The cantons of Zug (+24 percent) and Uri (+14.3 percent) follow in the second and third place respectively. At the other end of the scale, the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden and Obwalden bring up the rear after having recorded double-digit declines.
In its report, Creditreform also highlights a 6 percent increase in corporate bankruptcies to 5,200 cases. The trend here is also on an upward trajectory.
